If a kid enjoys anything, they continue to do it. Am I right? The same goes for skating, if they enjoy it they will continue skating. Part of the enjoyment recipe comes from the coach's approach, the other part comes from the parent's positive approach towards the sport.
There is such a fine line between encouraging (positive) and pushing too hard (negative). The end result should be for building character, effort, actively participate and pursue the goals set forth to have a true sense of accomplishment.
Children how are taught commitment and improving upon themselves in a nurturing and emotionally healthy environment are capable to manage success and failure appropriately.
Just as with infants how parents "ooh and aah" over the smallest things, the same is true with skating and acknowledging all improvements, no matter how insignificant they may be. The acknowledgement of the improvements combined with listening and smiling more often will get noticed by your skater. This will encourage them. While you are smiling, remember to support them and their efforts, tell them how proud you are of them.
*Set the goals. Meet the challenges. Smile and have fun along the way!
